Dialogue 1, Dialogue 2, and Dialogue 3 are woodcut prints that translate Lee Ufan’s recent painting series Dialogue through traditional Japanese woodblock printing techniques. They were produced in 2022 over roughly six months at the Adachi Institute of Woodcut Prints, which carries on the traditional woodblock techniques nurtured through the production of ukiyo-e in the Edo period, together with carver Chikura Kishi and printer Shoko Kishi.

Lee has explored printmaking since the early 1970s, and for him, a print is not a means of reproduction. He has found the potential of printmaking in the subtle differences that emerge as the same block is printed again and again, and in the room the process leaves for others to enter: those who make the paper, carve the blocks, and print them.

In these works, extremely pale colors were printed one over another nearly twenty times to render gradations that appear as if drawn in a single stroke of the brush. The carving, which makes use of the tip of a knife sharpened to an extremely thin edge to express the movement of the brush, together with the printing technique that presses pigment into the fibers of the washi paper, produced layers of color that are at once quiet and powerful. The prints are made on Echizen kizuki hosho washi handmade by Ichibei Iwano, a Living National Treasure.

The artist’s brushwork, the materials of wood and paper, and the hands of the artisans. The “dialogue” named in the title crystallizes on the picture surface through the relationships in which these elements respond to one another.
