NAOKI HONJO

Born in Tokyo in 1978. After graduating from the Department of Photography, Faculty of Arts, Tokyo Polytechnic University, he completed a master’s degree in Media Art at the same university. Using a large-format film camera with bellows, he employs a distinctive technique to photograph landscapes as if they were dioramas. Urban spaces, nature, artificial structures, and even people in the real world are rendered miniature-like, evoking a mysterious sensation as though one has been led into another world.

In 2006, he received the Kimura Ihei Photography Award for his photobook small planet. Since then, he has continued to capture cityscapes, everyday life, and natural landscapes through unique visual effects, exploring the boundary between reality and fiction. Major solo exhibitions include “(un)real utopia” (Tokyo Photographic Art Museum, 2022).
His works are held in public collections such as The Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, and the Tokyo Photographic Art Museum.

Small Garden is a work created through fixed-point observation photography of elementary school playgrounds. These spaces, like small miniature gardens, become the stage for various events brought about by the children’s actions. For some viewers, the work may evoke nostalgia, memories, and sentimental feelings associated with the world of childhood. Small Garden can be perceived as a kind of small utopia, isolated from society.

In this project, the playgrounds of Inage Elementary School in Chiba Prefecture and Abiko Daiichi Elementary School in Chiba Prefecture serve as the setting, where the story of a sports day unfolds. This work is composed by editing and connecting a sequence of photographs taken one frame at a time.
