Nagano Prefectural Treasure

The house was built in 1889 to a design by the French priest Father Clément, within the church grounds north of Matsumoto Castle, as a residence for missionaries and evangelists. In 1991, it was relocated to its present site to make way for road widening.

A red-brick chimney rises from its tiled hipped roof. The exterior walls are clapboard in the Early American style, with a single incised line along the lower edge of each board. The tall, narrow windows open inward, and louvered shutters (yoroido) are fitted on the outside. The veranda on the north side is enclosed on three sides by glass doors, but because the fittings between the veranda and the interior are doubled, it may originally have been an open balcony without fittings. The glass doors are thought to have been added as protection against Matsumoto’s cold winters. The foundation was originally made of red brick; for reinforcement, it was replaced with concrete at the time of relocation, and brick was applied to the surface to preserve the original appearance. The interior of the foundation, making use of its height, served as a storeroom and is said to have held wine barrels as well.

Inside are eight private rooms (bedrooms on the second floor; a reception room, office, dining room, and kitchen on the first floor) and a bathroom. Every private room has a fireplace, making this an authentic Western-style residence.

In 2005, it was designated a Nagano Prefectural Treasure. It is regarded as the oldest surviving Western-style building in the prefecture.
