Julian Opie was born in London in 1958. He lives and works in London. His distinctive visual language transforms people and landscapes through simplified lines and vivid colours. Influenced by classical portraiture, Egyptian hieroglyphs, Japanese woodblock prints, as well as public information boards and traffic signs, his work connects the visual language of modern life with the fundamentals of art history.

Works featuring walking figures have been developed across sculpture, moving image and murals, and presented around the world. Some are permanently installed in public spaces, where they have become part of the urban landscape and familiar presences within their local communities.

Opie has exhibited widely in London, Vienna, Shanghai, Melbourne and Lisbon, among other cities. His work is held in major public collections including Tate, the British Museum and The Museum of Modern Art (MoMA), New York.

Busan Walkers is a sculpture series by Julian Opie based on people walking along the seafront in Busan, South Korea. Opie photographed actual passers-by, translated their figures into drawings, and then developed them further into three-dimensional works. Facial expressions and details are boldly reduced, while elements such as clothing, hairstyles, bags, mobile phones, stride and the swing of the arms are captured through concise outlines, giving each figure its own distinctive rhythm. This reflects the way we actually register the people and world around us as edited drawings.

Painted resin figures are rendered in vivid, individual colours, transforming anonymous passers-by into clear and memorable presences. Their slightly reduced scale, smaller than life-size, avoids any sense of monumentality and instead creates a more intimate relationship with the viewer. The colours are taken from elements of the people, hair, a bag, trousers. This limited palette allows just for the figure to be represented like a complicated shadow.

Seen from the front, the figures appear almost like flat images, while a shift in viewpoint reveals their physical substance as sculptures. When the four figures are placed together, they seem to move in different directions, pass one another, and share the same space. Through colour and simplified line, Opie transforms the ordinary act of walking into a precise visual language, quietly bringing the presence of people in contemporary urban life into focus.
