Ken + Julia Yonetani are an artist duo with unusual backgrounds: Ken is a former financial broker, while Julia is a former academic historian. Through extensive research into environmental and social issues, they transform their findings using distinctive methods into works that are both beautiful and unsettling. Their practice spans a wide range of media, including installation, video, and performance.
Major exhibitions include the Venice Biennale (representing Australia, 2009), Singapore Biennale (2013), the solo exhibition The Last Temptation (National Gallery of Australia, 2015–2016), Ken + Julia Yonetani: That is why I want to be saved (Kadokawa Culture Museum, 2020–2021), and the solo exhibition CRYSTAL PALACE (art cruise gallery, Tokyo, 2025).
In recent years, they have been practising pesticide-free farming in rural Kyoto while continuing to create and exhibit their work internationally.

作家たちはこの滞在をきっかけに「Mildura Palimpsest #8」では初の塩による彫刻作品《Still Life: The Food Bowl》を発表。
The Museum of Art and Natureに2027年より常設展示される予定である。

The Last Supper – Artist’s Proof
2014
Murray River salt
L900 × W72 × H122 cm
The Last Supper is entirely created from salt. The artists’ interest in salt began during their stay in Mildura, at the heart of the Murray–Darling Basin, from September to December 2010, as part of an artist residency for Mildura Palimpsest #8 in 2011.
This region, one of Australia’s most important agricultural areas, has been affected by increasing soil salinity caused by factors including deforestation and irrigation associated with large-scale agriculture, with serious consequences for its rivers and farmland. To reduce the amount of salt entering the river system, salt interception schemes divert saline groundwater away from the rivers. The salt used to create this work was harvested from one of these schemes.
Inspired by their stay in Mildura, the artists presented Still Life: The Food Bowl, their first sculptural work made from salt, at Mildura Palimpsest #8. They continued to develop their work with salt, culminating in The Last Supper, their largest salt installation.
The work raises questions about the environmental costs of contemporary agricultural methods, as well as the safety and future sustainability of food production in the face of global climate change, environmental pollution, and destruction.
The work The Last Supper exists in two versions: Edition 1/1, which will be permanently installed at The Museum of Art and Nature from 2027, and an Artist’s Proof (AP), which is retained by the artists. The Artist’s Proof is the version presented in this exhibition.
