I make sculptures that aim to sustain a relationship with viewers through the imagination. I believe one of the ways an artwork can exist is as a starting point for “rich time” spent imagining things that cannot be seen.

Sculpture conveys feeling primarily through the form of an object and the presence of its material. By deliberately incorporating formless “voids” into my sculptures, however, I believe I can stir the viewer’s imagination and create room to embrace the many different images it brings forth.

I hope that a work touched in this way by the viewer’s imagination becomes a richer form of sculptural expression, imbued with the viewer’s latent images, and goes on to hold a deep connection with them.

This work is one of the early pieces in a series built around the motif of the sheep, which I began in 2012.

When you visit, I invite you to freely layer onto the work whatever comes to mind from the “sheep” and “stars” in your own memories, and to imagine your own stories and interpretations.

And if you have the chance, please try sharing what you imagined in front of the work with others. I would be very happy if, through that conversation, you could enjoy the richness of there being so many different interpretations.

At a time when diversity and tolerance are being put to the test, I hope that, through my work, we may continue to share days of generosity and richness in which we are able to understand one another.
