teamLab

teamLab (f. 2001) is an international art collective that seeks to navigate the confluence of art, science, technology, and the natural world. Through art, the interdisciplinary group of specialists, including artists, programmers, engineers, CG animators, mathematicians, and architects, aims to explore the relationship between the self and the world, and new forms of perception.

In order to understand the world around them, people separate it into independent entities with perceived boundaries between them. teamLab seeks to transcend these boundaries in our perceptions of the world, of the relationship between the self and the world, and of the continuity of time. Everything exists in a long, fragile yet miraculous, borderless continuity.

Their works are in the permanent collections of museums around the world. They have also held exhibitions, museums and large-scale permanent exhibitions in Japan and abroad where visitors can experience their art.

United, Fragmented, Repeated and Impermanent World

United, Fragmented, Repeated and Impermanent World is inspired by the square paintings of the Edo-period painter Itō Jakuchū, particularly “Birds, Animals, and Flowering Plants” and “Trees, Flowers, Birds and Animals”. teamLab found an affinity between Jakuchū’s technique of dividing the surface into countless squares of multiple colors and contemporary pixel art. The use of several colors within each square also appears to anticipate the phenomenon of optical mixing of colors, before Impressionism and Pointillism.

In this artwork, plants and animals move in a virtual three dimensional space, created by Ultrasubjective Space, which has no boundary with the physical space of the viewer. The colors of the three dimensional space are divided by layered patterns within the fixed squares on the screen. Viewed from a distance, the plants and animals move slowly amid brilliant colors created through optical mixing; viewed up close, the colors within each square change more rapidly. Two different time axes coexist.

The viewer’s presence causes the surrounding squares to change, and the world of Jakuchū’s square paintings and the world abstracted through the squares intermingle.
