The Matsumoto City Museum is a long-established museum whose history dates back to 1906. For nearly fifty years, it exhibited the history and culture of Matsumoto on the grounds of Matsumoto Castle, a National Treasure. As the old building aged and became too small, a new one was needed, and it was decided to move from the Ninomaru (second enclosure) to the Sannomaru (third enclosure), where the residences of upper- and middle-ranking samurai once stood. The surroundings still preserve the Edo-period layout of residential lots, and gardens with ponds evoke the atmosphere of that time.
The new building is of reinforced-concrete construction (partly steel-framed), with a site area of 4,115 m² and a total floor area of 7,775 m². To protect the collections, the building went through a “seasoning period” (karashi kikan) after construction, during which gases and moisture from the building materials were allowed to dissipate, and the museum opened in October 2023. The exhibition rooms and storage areas are set back from the exterior walls, with corridors of management areas in between, so that they are not affected by outdoor temperatures, and a vestibule is provided at the entrance.
The double-height space at the southeast corner facing Daimyo-cho Street is a bright, open public space glazed on two sides. Visitors can enter free of charge as far as the Panoramic Lounge on the north side of the third floor, which offers a view of the Northern Alps. The upper part of the south exterior wall is a pure white surface without openings, but its design, resembling folded washi paper, changes its expression when lit at night.
