About the Building
Year of construction: 2004
Architect: Toyo Ito
Builder: Takenaka Corporation
Built in 2004 to a design by Toyo Ito, an architect from Nagano Prefecture, this is a cultural facility dedicated to the performing arts.
By placing the stage at the center of the site and the auditorium toward the rear, the design widens the area through which people circulate, creating an open space with no front or back, where people gather naturally. The Theatre Park lies along the route to the auditorium, beyond the grand staircase: a spacious area where the back of the main stage can be seen through a glass wall. Taking advantage of the site’s abundant spring water, the building is surrounded by water.
The curved exterior walls are composed of glass surfaces and panels of GRC (glass-fiber-reinforced concrete) inlaid with glass, and the interior is filled with soft light. The Main Hall has a horseshoe-shaped plan with four tiers of balconies and a four-sided stage, planned to accommodate a wide range of productions. The rooftop is a lawn open to the public, planted with lilacs in memory of the lilac park that once occupied the site.
The building has received the 47th BCS Prize and has been selected as one of the 100 outstanding halls chosen by acoustic professionals.
