明治23（1890）年創業の老舗料亭『割烹 松本館』が、昭和10（1935）年頃に建て替えた木造の料亭建築。東京の目黒雅叙園に感銘を受けた2代目当主が、松本にも賓客をもてなす施設を作りたいと、松本出身の彫刻家太田南海に設計監修を依頼した。何度か火事に遭い新館部分は改修されているが、建築当時は松本城に向かって入口があり、ロータリーを設けた石造りの洋館風の佇まいだったという。
4年余りの歳月をかけたという旧館2階の大広間『鳳凰の間』は99畳あり、結婚披露宴など祝いの席用に設けられた。隅々まで豪華絢爛な装飾が施され、松本の宴の席を盛り上げてきた。階下にはそれぞれに趣の異なる6つの個室があり、『葡萄の間』は一室全て南海が手掛けたとされる。松本の特産物でもある葡萄を各所にあしらい、抑えた色彩で落ち着いた空間となっている。渡り廊下を介してつながる別棟には、庭園に面して八角堂を模した手洗所がある。赤く塗った軸部や、壁面上部の欄干など中国風に仕上げており、ハレの日を演出するため斬新で格調高い空間になるよう考案したという。
平成16（2004）年、旧館と手洗所が国の登録有形文化財に指定。平成28（2016）年には、松本市世界遺産に登録された。

A wooden restaurant building that was rebuilt around 1935 by the long-established restaurant “Kappo Matsumoto-kan” founded in 1890. Impressed by Meguro Gajoen in Tokyo, the second generation owner wanted to create a facility to entertain guests in Matsumoto as well, and asked Nankai Ota, a sculptor from Matsumoto, to supervise the design. The new building has been renovated due to several fires, but at the time of construction, the entrance was facing Matsumoto Castle and had a stone Western-style appearance with a roundabout.
The “Phoenix Room” on the second floor of the old building is 99 tatami mats and was set up for wedding receptions and other celebratory occasions. It took more than four years to complete the project. Every corner of the room is decorated with gorgeous ornaments, making Matsumoto’s banquets more exciting. There are six private rooms downstairs, each with a different flavor, and the “Grape Room” is said to have been entirely designed by Nankai. Grapes, a specialty of Matsumoto, are used throughout, and the subdued colors create a relaxing atmosphere. In the annex building, which is connected to the main building via a corridor, there is a hand-washing station that resembles an octagonal hall facing the garden. The red-painted shafts and the balustrade on the upper part of the wall are finished in Chinese style, and it is said that the idea was to create a novel and prestigious space for a special occasion.
In 2004, the old building and the washroom were designated as Tangible Cultural Properties of Japan. In 2016, it was registered as a Matsumoto City World Heritage Site.
