Born in Saitama Prefecture in 1980. Graduated from the Department of Sculpture, Faculty of Fine Arts, Tokyo National University of Fine Arts and Music in 2006, and completed the Master’s Course in Sculpture at the same university in 2008. In 2008, he received his MFA in sculpture from the same university. As a break dancer himself, he formed the hip-hop team “UNITYSELECTIONS” in 1999 and “HIPHOP Sentai BBOYGER” in 2007. By utilizing his experience in breakdancing and incorporating the technique and dynamism of breakdancing into his expression, and by pursuing the relationship between the human body and clothing through wooden sculptures without pedestals, and the transformation of space created by the “B-BOY” sculpture, he has developed works full of tension and power.

Recent exhibitions include “LET’S MOVE IT” (PARCE, Tokyo/2020), “TAKU OBATA SCULPTURE Display” (Japan House London, London/2020), and “HYPER LANDSCAPE “Transcending Landscape”” (Watari-um Art Museum, Tokyo/2017). (Watari-Um Museum of Contemporary Art, Tokyo/2018), “NEW VISION SAITAMA 5: The Approaching Body” (The Museum of Modern Art, Saitama/2016). Solo exhibitions include “BUST A MOVE” (Jonathan LeVine Gallery NY, New York/2014) and “Obata Taoka B-BOY on Sky Court” (Nakamura Keith Haring Museum Sky Court and Freedom Corridor, 2012). In 2019, he will be an artist-in-residence in London for “MA show” (City and guilds of London art school BA / 2019). In 2008, he won the grand prize at the Tokyo Wonder Wall Open Call 2008.

This is a wood sculpture that I was invited to create at the City & Guilds of London Art School from May 2019 to March 2020. Because I could not use electric tools due to school reasons, I did not use any machines and carved everything by hand. This is a work made in a way that is not usually done in Japan.

This is a wood carving of “B GIRL” from the symmetry series, and the pattern of the jacket is the most complicated structure I have ever made.
