About the Building

Year of construction: 1886 (according to the ridge-beam inscription)
Architect: Unknown
Builder: Itaro Yanagisawa (master carpenter)

Registered Tangible Cultural Property of Japan / Matsumoto City Modern Heritage

The bunko-gura, a dozo (earthen-walled storehouse) for books and documents, was built in 1886 by the Hirabayashi family, a prominent merchant family. An inscription on the ridge beam records that it was built in 1886. The house name Hikaruya is said to derive from the fact that the head of the family came from the Hikari district of present-day Azumino.

The main house on the same grounds is a merchant house in the dozo style, built in 1887. Its demolition was once under consideration, but the current owner took it over, wishing to “bring the building back to life as a place where people gather.” Under the direction of the space designer Kunikazu Takatori, it was reborn as a restaurant in 2007. The Japanese restaurant Higashi, which makes use of the main house just as it was, and the French restaurant Nishi, a renovated plaster storehouse, operate in separate storehouse buildings arranged around a central courtyard. The bunko-gura is an annex of Nishi.

The bunko-gura survived the great fire of 1888 that burned the surrounding area, although it is thought to have been repaired afterward, including re-plastering. The safe inside appears to have been there from the beginning and was made heavy to prevent theft. So that the floor would not sink, the spot where the safe sits was laid in concrete rather than a wooden frame. It is thought to have been a storehouse for valuables such as money and title deeds. At the meeting edges of the double doors (meshiawase), a series of stacked steps called kakeko was added to keep the seal airtight in case of fire. The metal lock fitting on the inner sliding door bears a boar’s-eye (inome) motif, said to ward off evil spirits. The ochre color of the exterior walls, originally white plaster, is said to have been applied as camouflage during World War II so that the building would not be targeted in air raids.

In 2010, the building was listed as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property of Japan, and in 2016 it was registered as a Matsumoto City Modern Heritage site.
