About the Building

Year of construction: 1967
Architect: Matsumoto Structural Design Office (Shujiro Matsumoto)
Builder: Unknown

This building was once the home of Moriwaki Cutlery Shop, and the shop’s name still remains. It is one unit of a four-unit nagaya (row house) under sectional ownership, located at the intersection of Imamachi and Rokku-machi.

Imamachi belonged to Shiraita Village (Shiraita-mura), outside the layout of the castle town, but as a gateway to the Azumi region where goods were actively exchanged, it flourished as a wholesale district. Rokku-machi, on the other hand, was a government district with samurai residences and domain offices in the late Edo period; after the Meiji Restoration, however, merchants moved in and it developed rapidly, with the establishment of the Kaisansha, a new industrial cooperative. Both were energetic towns where people and goods circulated.

Where these two towns meet, Mr. Moriwaki opened a cutlery shop in 1958. Moriwaki was from Tokushima and had worked as a peddler of Tosa blades, famous for their forged edge tools (uchihamono). He mainly handled blades used in forestry and similar work, such as hatchets (nata), saws (nokogiri), log hooks (tobiguchi), sickles (kama), and chainsaws, and he had a connection to Shinshu through his summer visits for mountain work. He bought blades, fitted them with handles and other parts to sell, and also took on maintenance.

The building was rebuilt as part of the Imamachi modernization project, and a grand parade was held when the project was completed. At the time of rebuilding, a workshop was installed in the basement, with a shop on the first floor and combined shop-residences on the second and third floors. The exterior wall of the former Moriwaki Cutlery Shop unit is the original. Taking advantage of the conspicuous corner location, the chamfered corner wall (sumikiri) was turned into rental signboard space, carrying advertisements for other shops in the shopping street.

Today, the furniture brand atelier m4 rents the building and uses it as an office. The studio, where the shop’s shelves were cleared away and the walls and ceiling repainted white, has glass from floor to ceiling on its southwest side, making it a bright, open space that feels connected to the outdoors.
