About the Building

Year of construction: c. 1935
Design supervision: Nankai Ota
Builder: Unknown

Registered Tangible Cultural Property of Japan / Matsumoto City Modern Heritage

Kappo Matsumoto-kan, a long-established ryotei (traditional Japanese restaurant) founded in 1890, rebuilt its premises around 1935 as a wooden ryotei building (the old wing). The second-generation proprietor, impressed by Meguro Gajoen in Tokyo, wished to create a place in Matsumoto where distinguished guests could be entertained, and commissioned Nankai Ota, a sculptor born in Matsumoto, to supervise the design. The new wing was renovated after several fires, but at the time of construction the entrance faced Matsumoto Castle, and the building is said to have resembled a stone Western-style mansion, with a circular driveway at the front.

On the second floor of the old wing is the great hall known as Hoo no Ma (Phoenix Room), said to have taken more than four years to complete. It spans 99 tatami mats and was built for celebrations such as wedding receptions. The room is ornamented with sculptures by Nankai Ota and ceiling paintings by Reikyo Kaneko, among other decoration, and has served as a venue for banquets in Matsumoto. On the floor below are six private rooms, each with its own character; one of them, Budo no Ma (Grape Room), is said to have been entirely the work of Nankai. Grapes, a specialty of Shinshu, appear throughout in a subdued palette, creating a calm space. Reached by a connecting corridor, a separate building by the garden houses a washroom modeled on an octagonal hall (hakkakudo). Its red-painted structural frame and the balustrade along the upper wall are finished in a Chinese style, and Nankai is said to have devised a space both innovative and dignified to set the stage for special occasions.

In 2004, the old wing and the washroom were registered as Registered Tangible Cultural Properties of Japan, and in 2016 the building was registered as a Matsumoto City Modern Heritage site.
